Psychotherapy and Counsellng In The Cotswolds

Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling

The foundations of an Integrative approach lie in the recognition that there is not one single therapeutic approach which is more effective than all the others, but that a synthesis of theoretical and methodological strands of psychotherapy and counselling best meet the needs of those in distress. Therefore Integrative practitioners use a variety of understandings and skills to “meet” the person seeking therapy.

Integrative therapy pays attention to your past or 'developmental' experience, your current 'here and now' circumstances, and your potential for future growth and development.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a psychological therapy, developed by Dr Francine Shapiro, an American clinical psychologist, in the 1980’s. It is approved in the United Kingdom by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) and is an effective treatment for people experiencing psychological difficulties arising from traumatic experiences, such as assault, road traffic accidents, war trauma, torture, natural or man-made disasters, sexual abuse and childhood neglect. EMDR is also an effective treatment for conditions such as panic disorder, addictions, phobias, performance anxiety, self-esteem issues and other anxiety-related disorders.

During EMDR treatment the client attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief sequential doses of bi-lateral brain stimulation while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. A range of therapeutic approaches are combination with eye movements or other forms of dual attention stimulation, such as hand-tapping or audio tones.

EMDR facilitates the accessing of the traumatic memory network and the information is processed allowing new associations to be made between the disturbing memory and more adaptive memories or information, alleviating emotional and physiological distress, and allowing the development of cognitive insights.

Art Therapy

Sometimes it's difficult to find the words to describe how we feel and what's troubling us. Painting and drawing, using sandtrays and puppets can offer us an alternative way to express ourselves. Engaging with our creativity can be a liberating process and is an important part of the human experience. Art therapy enables us to rehearse difficult external situations, explore internal conflicts and resolve unfinished business. It can help us build self esteem, improve self image and release tensions.
